NOVARTIS AG, Basel, Switzerland
HEAD OF HUMAN RIGHTS
I developed Novartis’ first comprehensive Human Rights Strategy, updated its Human Rights Guideline, authored its first joint UK/Australia Modern Slavery Statement, and led a specialist team in implementation of its Human Rights Program. Our team successfully embedded human rights risk in the company’s Enterprise Risk Management system and integrated respect for human rights within the processes of key internal functions.
2015-2018
STORA ENSO, Helsinki, Finland
HEAD OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS
I further developed the Human Rights Program and led working groups in the identification of Stora Enso’s salient human rights issues and the preparation of its first UK Modern Slavery Act Statement. I managed a multi-year public/private partnership with the International Labor Organization on the promotion of decent work and elimination of child labour in supply chains in Pakistan.

I designed and conducted DIHR’s first comprehensive Human Rights Impact Assessment, of a major mining development in Mozambique. I co-led sector-wide human rights impact assessments of emerging oil & gas and tourism programs in Myanmar. I co-led a human rights risk scoping of a major pulp mill construction and wood supply project in China.

HUMAN RIGHTS SPECIALIST
I founded Right2Respect, a business and human rights consultancy that specialized in supporting extractive sector companies to implement the United Nations' Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Key projects included the implementation of a human rights assessment of a paper mill in northern Pakistan, including coaching local staff and quality assuring the process. In Bolivia, I led the development of a project-level grievance mechanism and multi-stakeholder engagement model for a major mining project, which included consultations with project-affected indigenous communities to integrate their traditional dispute resolution practices.

In support of the implementation of a major national land reform initiative, I trained indigenous organizations in the lowlands of Bolivia in the planning and management of a million hectare traditional territory and the development of sustainable natural resource use regulations.

LAND CLAIMS NEGOTIATOR
I was a provincial government Negotiator on various comprehensive land claim negotiations between indigenous peoples and the Governments of Canada and Province of British Columbia. I directed the development and implementation of negotiation strategies, and the preparation of legal agreements for settlement offers regarding land and natural resource use and management, law-making authority, taxation and resource revenue- sharing.
